We currently live in Key West, where we’re working on a couple of really fun food related projects which we hope to launch in the coming months.

This blog is mostly about our experiences, living in the Southernmost part of the United States.

The past couple of weeks have been a lot of fun. We finally got out to see some of the attractions like the Hemingway House (amazing), the museums, the butterfly house, the southernmost point and the lighthouse. We grilled whole snappers, which were delicious and we played a lot of cuban music.

Valentine’s Day was really adventurous. We walked the whole island and popped into the most bizarre places.

Work couldn’t be more exciting. Ideas are popping up and domains are being bought. It’s so much fun working with different people on various projects

That’s all for now.

Mischa is really enjoying discovering and experimenting with local ingredients. She’s already created and tested some interesting ideas for her cookbook.

Fresh oyster dinner. After church we walked around the church grounds and finally saw the famous grotto of Key West. The grotto was built to seek protection from hurricanes from Our Blessed Mother Mary. Since it’s construction in 1922, Key West hasn’t seen a devastating hurricane. Pretty interesting. We also saw the shrine to the unborn, which was really moving.

We checked out Martin’s for brunch. They have really great German toast.

After that we went home to catch up on house work. Jacob built part of a fence that had to be replaced and also replaced the boards on the front porch with brand new ones. Mischa did a deep clean on the house.

We went to a chicken fry for dinner at Sarabeth’s. It was really good. Neither of us have had fried chicken in years and this was a welcoming introduction to Southern cuisine.

We took a walk after dinner and stopped into Two Friends, but Brian wasn’t there, so we went to this country bar and watched people fall off a mechanical bull over and over again. Mischa got some beads thrown at her for free drinks at the drag show, so we went over there and checked out a show. Jacob got hit on by some guys. It was hilarious.

As we were walking home we spotted an outdoor tiki bar a block from our house and met some locals. We were invited to dinner at Harry Truman’s Little White House for the inauguration on Tuesday.

It’s absolutely beautiful outside today. Happy MLK day!

Oh and we also made some really awesome homemade banana ice cream the other day! Yum!

After lunch at B.O.’s yesterday.

After lunch at B.O.’s yesterday.

Photo

More photos here.

More photos here.

We can’t choose between license plates. Mischa had the fresh Black-fin tuna over penne pasta and Jacob had the grilled Wahoo over angel hair pasta.

Then we went to check out some new watering holes. We accidentally ended up in a swinger’s bar. Everyone in there looked like a Carney.

Today we went to the famous B.O.’s (Buddy Owen’s) Fish Wagon and got some really great fish sandwiches. We’re not particular fans of fish sandwiches, but these were fantastic. Buddy Owen used to cook for Shel Silverstein and Jimmy Buffet.

Then we walked off our sandwiches along the docks on the shore, admiring the amazing yachts that have sailed from all around the world.

1.14.2009

Driving down to Key West wasn’t as terrible as I thought it would be. The day we left, we got off on a rough start because of the snow. Once that was cleared away, it occurred to me that we have a second refrigerator and that everything in there had to be thrown out. So I threw everything out. The neat freak in me emerged. I had to clean the empty fridge before we left. Then I had to clean the floor on the first floor in case anyone stopped by. We were on our way at 10:30. Three and a half hours behind schedule. We went to bed the night before at 2:30. I was already exhausted.

After 12 hours of driving through gloomy snow, slush and rain we arrived in Atlanta at 11:30 (est). It was 50 degrees. We checked in, had a couple of cocktails, took the dogs on a midnight walk and went to bed. I really like Atlanta. It’s clean and eclectic.

The next day we drove for another 12 hours. Jacob cut almost 2 hours off of our time. That included stops and getting lost. This road trip day was one of the most fun I’ve ever had. It made me think about how it’s possible to be so close to a single human- to know each others secrets, weaknesses, fears and ambitions. I think its rare.

We got to our house around 9:30 and started checking everything out. Comcast was out on the entire island and I discovered a couple of ants here and there in the bathrooms, so we had to call the exterminator. Other than that, everything looked gorgeous.

We really lucked out on the purchase of our house. Its a free standing house in old town- we’re 4 blocks away from Duval Street (the Bourbon Street of the Keys). We have our own small fenced ‘backyard’ with a pool and hot tub. It’s private and cozy. We’re at 13 feet elevation, which means our place won’t flood in the event of a hurricane and we’re surrounded by palms so there won’t be too much wind damage either.

The next day I was out to meet the fish mongers and look for the best selection of produce on the island. Everyone is so incredibly helpful. They’re also genuinely appreciative of your business. That day we bought some tilapia, snow crab and an amazing Spanish wine.

Yesterday it rained. We bought a hammock and an orchid and a bonsai tree. Did you know that Home Depot has a 1 year guarantee on all plants?

We’re supposed to have two of the coldest days in Key West history today and tomorrow. It’s currently 68 and sunny. I’m thinking about buying some local salmon and grilling it with a cedar plank and making a black bean, tomato, scallion and avocado salad. We’ll see what happens. This month is also the first annual National Drag History Month, so I’d like to see a show.

Tomorrow is tax day, which I’m not too excited about and it’ll be the official start date of my e-cookbook. I’m going to write it all in a journal and put my photos in it. I think it’ll make a nice heirloom to pass down eventually. Then after testing, I’ll put the final products online.

On a side note, my nightmares have gone away. I told my mom about them and she suggested that I eat a piece of fruit and have a glass of wine right before bed to rid them. It worked.

1.10.2009

We decided to pack up and leave to Key West from January to mid March to work on projects and hang out in a very creative atmosphere.

In February 2008, we fell in love with and bought a 100+ year...

In February 2008, we fell in love with and bought a 100+ year old rehab in the old town of Key West. We love the local people, the atmosphere and the culinary scene down there. It’s become a perfect retreat for us to the point of where we’ll spend most of the year there.

November 9th, 2007

Jacob left his cofounded businesses for a variety of reasons.
We spent our first anniversary at the infamous Post Ranch Inn, in Big Sur, California. We had a super relaxing time hiking, swimming, tanning and eating the yummy gastronomic creations. We stayed in a Tree House which couldn’t have been more romantic. There was no radio or TV, just a wood burning fireplace and plenty of wine. We loved it.
